Dog's Best Friend To Have Day

By David Steinberg
Of the Journal
Ted Kerasote, author of “Merle's Door, Lessons from a Freethinking Dog,” will discuss his book at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15 at Page One, 11018 Montgomery NE.
Kerasote, a wilderness writer, found his dog, Merle, during a rafting expedition on the Utah portion of the San Juan River: “He came out of the night, appearing suddenly in my headlights, a big, golden dog, panting, his front paws tapping the ground in an anxious little dance.”
In a 2007 review, The Oregonian said that “in trying to understand this strange and vulnerable dog's ‘language' from the get-go, Kerasote expresses a commitment to canine communication that will guide the rest of his extraordinary book. Amid the rugged landscape of rural northwestern Wyoming, Merle and the author form a deep and powerful bond over the dog's 13-year existence, a bond Kerasote believes comes from a life spent roaming free in the wilderness.”
According to the review, Kerasote argues that Merle was living proof of his hypothesis — that wolves and dogs share the same DNA, and wolves are smarter than domestic dogs because they run free.
The review says the last chapters, in which Kerasote details Merle's final weeks, is a tender account of an animal's death.
