Cuarto Centennial History Series
About the Author

The Journal is publishing a biweekly series of history articles to commemorate the settlement of New Mexico by Juan de Oñate in 1598.
This series has been researched and written by Miguel Encinias of Albuquerque, whose experiences have taken him from the cockpit of a Spitfire plane in World War II to the publication as a co-editor of the English translation of "Historia de la Nueva Mexico, 1610," an epic poem written about the settlement of New Mexico by Gaspar Perea de Villagra, who accompanied Oñate.
Encinias holds a doctoral degree from the University of New Mexico. According to his resume, he also has taught French at the U.S. Air Force Academy, taught English for the United Arab Emirates Air Force, worked with various educational agencies on developing bilingual education programs in several languages, helped found La Compania de Teatro de Alburquerque and La Zarzuela de Alburquerque, and is a former board member of the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce.
He also is working with the Center of Southwest Culture on their anniversary plans.
Encinias is the author of a historical novel based on the founding of New Mexico, "Two Lives for Oñate," published this year by the University of New Mexico Press.
