The rocks started forming 34.9 million years ago when an eruption of a volcano, that may have lasted several years, dropped layers of hot ash and pumice forming a solid tuff. Cooling caused cracks or "joints" that gave way to weathering and erosion to form the pillars in City of Rocks State Park.
