City of Rocks State Park

Virtual Reality tour of the City of Rocks State Park in Grant County near Silver City. The rocks started forming 34.9 million years ago when an eruption of a volcano, that may have lasted several years, dropped layers of hot ash and pumice forming a solid tuff. Cooling caused cracks or "joints" that gave way to weathering and erosion to form the pillars in City of Rocks State Park.
