Fireworks can be terrifying for pets
Every holiday brings its own tradition and hoopla, and every holiday brings advice for how to keep your pets safe. Avoid letting the dog eat your Valentine chocolates. Don't let his costume obscure his vision when trick or treating. A lot of it is pure common sense, but animal welfare organizations want to educate or remind pet owners who might not have thought about the dangers of chocolate or Batman masks on a beagle.   (Friday, July 03, 2009)

Foxtails: A scourge on pets
Q: Would you again please warn pet owners of the dangers of “foxtails”? I'm sure you have in previous years but this past mild winter provided the perfect growing conditions for them. We're diligent in keeping our two large dogs out of harm's way.   (Friday, July 03, 2009)

Choosing the right vet requires study
Maybe you just adopted a pet, or maybe you just moved here, or maybe you realize that going to shot clinics, while economical, won't offer enough medical care for your dog or cat. Maybe, you think, you need to find a veterinarian.   (Friday, June 26, 2009)

Socialize pooch carefully
Q: My female boxer, Mocha, is 4 years old. She has been very nervous and scared around strangers since we bought her as a 7-week-old puppy. She trembles and hyperventilates. Socializing her more has not worked. Once she gets to know you, she loves you and will not be scared anymore. Is valerian root safe for dogs?    (Friday, June 26, 2009)

Thuggish cat stirs up trouble
Q: We have four cats, and the youngest one has turned into a bully. He especially torments the other male, who has always been skittish. We put a bell on his neck, we have Feliway diffusers in two rooms, and we have tried putting him in “time out” (small, dark bathroom by himself). Both males are neutered.   (Friday, June 19, 2009)

Volunteers hit the road to save animals
The passengers: two black Labs whose owners in Santa Fe lost their home to foreclosure, a mixed breed found in a Hobbs ditch, filthy and covered with ticks, and maybe 100,000 other dogs across the country, from Connecticut to California.   (Friday, June 19, 2009)

Feed cat before it's too late
Q: Our 13-year-old cat has stopped eating altogether. He has gone from 15 pounds down to 13 in two weeks, so we took him to a local veterinarian. They ran tests and found he had only a small heart murmur, so they put him on Clavamox and Enalapril. He's just wasting away before our eyes.   (Friday, June 12, 2009)

Friendly dog now a beast
Q: I have a very loving dog that I found at 4 weeks old and is now 2 1/2 years old. While as a puppy he was incredibly excited and anxious to play with any new dog, he has shifted into being extremely aggressive. On his daily walks, while he seems really excited at the sight of another dog, as soon as he gets close enough he starts lunging, growling and barking, even if the other dog is completely oblivious. It's making our daily walks a nightmare.   (Friday, June 05, 2009)

Animal Humane educates dogs, owners
Say you get yourself a dog, and when you take it for a walk, the dog pulls and pulls on the leash. You can't make the dog stop, so you stop: no more walks.   (Friday, June 05, 2009)
