Exercise, diet best help for old joints
Q: I've been giving my 10-year-old Westie glucosamine for her joints, and I take the people version. Can the old girl and I share the same people meds (glucosamine with MSM)?   (Friday, November 20, 2009)

A Year of Love
Since August, you've sent more than 750 photos and cast 10,010 votes in the Journal's pet calendar contest, co-sponsored by Best Friends Pet Services. These 12 faces will represent a month each in 2010, and buying a calendar will not only give you 365 days of enjoyment, but you'll also be helping homeless dogs and cats at the nonprofit Watermelon Mountain Ranch shelter.   (Friday, November 20, 2009)

Drive helps pet owners to feed their animals
While you're debating whether to slip some turkey to your already rotund cat or to allow the dog to lick the gravy bowl once the guests are gone, consider a Thanksgiving without the groaning table, without the cat and without the dog.   (Friday, November 13, 2009)

Pooch is adamant naturalist
Q: We have an 8-year-old part Shar-Pei, part chow who refuses to go into her dog house. Strangely enough, our last dog (Lab-husky mix) did the same thing. We have provided clean bedding and still she won't go in. She is totally an outdoor dog.   (Friday, November 13, 2009)

Canine influenza is no reason to panic
Canine influenza has been confirmed in New Mexico, but there's no need to panic.   (Friday, November 06, 2009)

Poor cat can't get rid of his itching
Q: Our cat, Bob, has several oozy, itchy patches of skin, especially around his head, chin and neck. He's on his second round of antibiotics plus prednisone. Just when the patches start to scab over, he scratches them and opens them up again. Our vet gave him a steroid shot on the first visit, and suggested treating him with Frontline even though she didn't see any evidence of infestation.   (Friday, November 06, 2009)

Surgery just one option for barkers
Q: We are considering moving into a retirement community. My Chihuahua barks a lot. It has been suggested that I have his vocal cords cut. That seems very cruel to me and I am reluctant to have it done.   (Friday, October 30, 2009)

Addison's can be managed
Q: My 2-year old Labrador retriever has been diagnosed with Addison's disease. I would appreciate your commenting on Addison's, what it is, symptoms to watch for, and treatment. Our Lab is recovering due to the expertise of our veterinarians and our dedication to his quality of life.   (Friday, October 23, 2009)

Calendar winners chosen
Readers, you sent more than 750 photos of your dog, cat, turtle, emu, guinea pig, horse and other pets for the calendar contest sponsored by the Journal and Best Friends Pet Services.   (Friday, October 23, 2009)

Pets have special concerns on holiday
So they put you in a costume that makes people laugh because your face is so serious and your outfit so silly. Then they jump up and answer the door every time the bell rings, tell you to shush when you try to warn them about monsters, and hand out candy and don't give you any.   (Friday, October 23, 2009)
