Monsoons Still Soaking New Mexico
Associated Press
Thunderstorms should generally decrease across New Mexico on Saturday and Sunday as high pressure migrates from the Bootheel to the Four Corners. However, the southwestern area of the state could still see spotty heavy rainfall over the weekend.
The high is expected to move east next week, allowing a significant increase in shower and storm coverage across the western areas.
Thunderstorms producing heavy rain continued across many parts of New Mexico Wednesday evening, prompting numerous flood advisories.
Many locations reported a quarter-inch to a half-inch of rain in 15 minutes, and radar estimated some spots had more than an inch for the evening. Small hail also was reported in northeastern New Mexico.
Showers and storms persisted well after midnight in central and southern sections.
Temperatures topped out in the 80s in most locations Wednesday afternoon, with 70s over the high terrain and 90s in a few locales. Highs ranged from 70 at Cloudcroft to 97 at Deming.
Readings today were predominantly in the 50s and 60s with low 70s in the far south.
The National Weather Service says that into Friday, thunderstorms will form over the high terrain as the day unfolds and drift slowly south, producing heavy rain that could lead to flooding.
Overall, areas from southwestern to northeastern New Mexico will be most favored and the northwestern and southeastern corners less likely to receive rain.
