Family, Friends Gather To Celebrate Life of Tibetan Buddhist Scholar

  Coming from as far as Switzerland and Canada, a few hundred people gathered Sunday afternoon at the College of Santa Fe to celebrate the life of Tibetan Buddhist scholar and northern New Mexico "living treasure" Lobsang Lhalungpa, 80, who died last week in a car crash.

  There's a fungus among us, and it may hold the key for producing greener energy. Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have uncovered important clues about how the fungus Tricoderma reesei— known to friends simply as T. reesei— converts plant fibers into sugars used to produce ethanol.

Early Voting Starts Tuesday

  Early voting in Bernalillo County starts Tuesday, and the first wave of absentee ballots will be mailed out that day, too. County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver said she expects turnout this year to reach about 70,000 voters— well ahead of the 48,000 who turned out in each of the 2004 and 2006 primary elections.
