Hayes: A Life Worth Remembering

  Thunderous applause and ear-piercing whistles filled the Rio Rancho High School gymnasium Saturday as teachers, parents and teammates stood up and cheered for Corbin Hayes.

  SANTA FE — Twenty years ago, Israel Houghton was "trying not to get too many speeding tickets on Cerrillos Road in my VW Bug," he said. Today, he's a chart-topping star of gospel music, working out of a Houston church whose weekly congregation numbers some 42,000. "I look back now and appreciate the culture of Santa Fe more than I did when I was in it," Houghton said. "Now, I'm one of the Texans who comes back for the snow."

  Among the 300 or so bills Gov. Bill Richardson signed into law this spring was one, only three sentences long, that says jails, prisons and youth detention centers in New Mexico can no longer shackle pregnant inmates as they are giving birth.
