  Atul Gawande wrote an excellent article in the June 1 New Yorker magazine explaining why McAllen, Texas, of all places, has some of the most expensive health care in the country. Gawande describes his travels through McAllen's hospitals and clinics, reviews data, interviews physicians and hospital administrators only to be told by an especially honest surgeon that McAllen's costs are so high because of over-utilization of health care, "pure and simple." The surgeon said local doctors "were racking up charges with extra tests, services and procedures."
