    Grandma Becomes Supermom ... Again

    They say heaven holds a special place for mothers and Lord knows for my sake I hope that's true. But I think a sweeter spot should be reserved for grandmothers. Especially those double-dippers like Barbara Ortega, who finished up their maternal duties, emptied their nests and then started anew by adopting the children their own children couldn't take care of. Not that it's been easy; not that it's always been Ortega's preferred course of action. Ortega wasn't looking to become supermom — again. "I went in kicking and screaming," said Ortega, a divorced, retired respiratory therapist who for 40 of her 58 years has been Mom, having raised three children and two stepchildren to adulthood, often on her own.
