TUCSON — The New Mexico State softball will team face No. 2 overall seed Arizona today in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Aggies (29-23) and Wildcats (48-7) are to meet at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPNU.
NMSU led the WAC with 52 home runs and 65 stolen bases. WAC Player of the Year Kelsey Horton batted .424 with an .816 slugging percentage and a .515 on-base percentage. She also topped the league with 16 home runs and 129 total bases.
Arizona was 26-2 at home this season and 30-1 against nonconference opponents. Mo Mercado is hitting .391 with 49 RBIs. Katiyana Mauga leads the Wildcats with 22 home runs and 55 RBIs. Danielle O’Toole (27-4, 1.08 ERA) has pitched eight shutouts this season.
Arizona swept a doubleheader from the Aggies in Las Cruces earlier this season, winning 8-0 and 11-1. Horton hit a solo homer for the Aggies in the last inning of the nightcap. NMSU totaled three hits in the two games.
South Carolina will face St. Francis (Pa.) on the other side of the bracket in the double-elimination regional.
