“There is really nothing out there but brush,” said Chief James Maxon.
He said said the blaze broke out around 12:45 p.m. near Northern and Encino.
“It grew rapidly,” he said.
The fire is burning through brush in a rural section of the city west of the Santa Ana Star Center. Maxon said no structures are threatened at this time.
He said around 100 firefighters from Sandoval County, Rio Rancho, Corrales and the State Forestry Division were working to get a perimeter around the fire.
Maxon said the cause of the fire is not clear, but it is the second fire in the area within the last three weeks.
