Sports Speak Up! Readers not sure UNM needs AD search committee

IT APPEARS UNM is going to proceed with the hiring of an athletic director in the midst of an audit and before a new president is hired (that should attract many highly qualified candidates). Some of the Pit’s suite holders didn’t pay up? (Well, it has been a bad display of basketball). Without enough players on the roster to conduct a scrimmage, our new men’s basketball coach is on an approximate 3 week tour of Canada, France and Egypt to help coach Canada’s Junior National Team? (Welcome to Lobo Town. UNM [not Canada] first).

UNM WILL NOW pay $50,000 to an executive search firm from out of state to find a new AD to replace Krebs. What are they going to do? Advertise the position on the internet, obtain qualification statements and then charge UNM for travel to interview all the applicants.  Once UNM receives recommendations a committee from around campus will review the applicants and make a decision? The insanity continues! Don’t we have qualified people in the state of New Mexico or at UNM that could accomplish the same thing and not charge us 50K in addition travel expenses?

— DS, Los Lunas

WHY DOES UNM believe it is necessary to spend $50,000 to find an AD? We have at least two candidates here at UNM. Bob Davie could become AD and Head Football coach, or Janice Ruggiero, the acting AD.

THIS OFFSEASON Coach Belichick and his Ninja staff went out in the trade market and free agency like the bosses they are and dramatically improved the Patriots’ roster. It would have been easy for Coach not to be aggressive. Instead, he attacked the team’s imperfections and masterfully handled the many key defensive players headed into free agency. I think Rex Ryan is the one who coined the phrase “win the offseason.” I never thought I’d see the day I’d go along with the crank-calling ex-coach. But oh, yeah, the Patriots WON the offseason.

SOME SPECIAL punishment needs to be created for those who attend professional golf tournaments and continually yell “Get in the hole” on every shot.

TO THE Alpha Fan and Mad as Heck: Don’t hate on prime time division one athletes like the Beach’s, the Gentry’s, or Amaya Brown for selecting a great school of their choosing! Last I checked, they are allowed to leave the state and make New Mexico proud from afar! Cheering for that future Seminole and sending that 505 love all the way to FSU!

— NM love for big time athletes
