Indictment: 3 inmates pulled guard into cell during jail attack

Three inmates are facing charges after an attack on a Sandoval County corrections officer last month, according to indictments recently filed in state court.

The May 14 incident came just over a week after two inmates escaped from the jail.

Edward Fielding, Zacharyah Ramirez and Enrique Barrientos each face charges including assault by a prisoner, conspiracy and assisting in the assault of a peace officer.

According to court documents, the corrections officer was delivering an extra pillow to Ramirez, 21, who was waiting in a cell with Fielding, 23. As the officer approached the cell, Barrientos, 25, said “get him” and pushed him inside. As the officer tried to get out of the cell, someone wrapped a towel around his neck.

That portion of the alleged attack was not caught on security video, but video from the pod that contains the cell showed inmates reacting to some sort of scuffle, deputies said. The security footage does show Barrientos approaching the officer with a towel around his neck.

The officer managed to escape the cell with the help of a fourth inmate.

Outside of the cell, Barrientos started to “throw punches,” and the officer punched back.

Two more corrections officers noticed the attack on camera and ran to the cell, where they saw the officer on the ground, struggling with Barrientos. The officers pepper sprayed Barrientos twice before they were able to put him in restraints.
