New wildfire on cliffs above monument visitor center near Pilar

A small wildfire was reported Friday afternoon in the cliffs above the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument Visitor Center in Pilar, along NM 68 between Espanola and Taos.

The fire is is believed to have been started a lightning strike and flared up today, putting up a column of smoke, says the New Mexico Fire Information website.

Firefighters from the Taos office of the federal Bureau of Land Managment are on scene and monitoring the fire. Current estimate is 1.5 acres.
