Chavez, Harvey win in Roswell
ROSWELL —Las Cruces pro Eric Chavez won the Rotary Desert Sun Golf Classic on Sunday at Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River. Chavez shot 136 for the 36 holes, one better than defending champion David Muttitt of Albuquerque. Chavez won $3,000.
Ladera director of golf Bill Harvey won the pro-senior division and $2,500 after his sudden death win over Ralph West of Phoenix and Carlton Blewett of Roswell. Harvey also finished fourth in the overall field.
• The Sun Country tied for 12th out of 15 teams in the Morse Cup competition ending last Friday at the Pacific Coast Amateur at Chambers Bay (University Place, Wash.) The three-player Sun Country was 11-over-par for the 36-hole tournament. Greg Condon, of Monte Vista, Colo., tied for 65th at 19 over, Santa Fe’s Marty Sanchez tied for 71st at 23 over and Santa Fe’s Ben Albin tied for 74 at 24 over.
• El Paso’s Juan Carlos Sapien and Albuquerque’s Slater Sivage made the Junior PGA Championship July 31-Aug. 3 in St. Albans, Mo.
• The third-annual Stephen E. Benavidez Memorial Golf tournament, benefiting the New Mexico Association of Energy Engineers, is Aug. 4 at Sandia Golf Club. It has a 7 a.m. shotgun and a $125 entry per person. Call 505-401-4326 for information.
• Rio Rancho’s Jacque Galloway shot 71-77 to qualify for match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur in Augusta, Mo., but she lost to Canada’s Celeste Dao, 3-and-2, in the round of 64 on Wednesday.
