Audit on UNM athletics should be complete by fall

The public may know much more about those uncollected Pit suite fees by the time the next basketball season rolls around.

State Auditor Tim Keller said Friday that he expects his office’s special audit of the University of New Mexico Athletics Department, the Lobo Club and the UNM Foundation will be done by “early fall.”

His office will publicly release the report when it’s complete.

Keller on May 31 alerted UNM he would conduct a special audit of UNM and its component units due to concerns “related to athletic fundraising activities and expenses.”

His office has since announced the audit will cover “numerous financial management concerns, including unpaid luxury boxes, compensation and travel.”

UNM said last month it had not collected $432,000 for the use of Pit suites going back to the 2010-11 school year. That followed a May acknowledgment by former athletic director Paul Krebs that UNM used about $25,000 in public funds to pay three private donors’ expenses during a 2015 athletic department fundraising golf trip to Scotland.

“Our audit is progressing toward the goal of providing comprehensive answers and bringing accountability,” Keller said in a written statement Friday.
