According to recent studies, nearly 40% of Americans do not get enough sleep, which can lead to a number of health-related issues such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, and many others.

How did you sleep last night? If your answer is, “It could have been better,” you are not alone. A recent study by the Better Sleep Council states that while 66% of Americans say they need eight or more hours of sleep a night, only 27% of them are actually getting it. According to the study published in May 2017, not only are Americans not getting enough sleep, 30% of people say they are dissatisfied with the quality of their sleep too!

Why is sleep so important? Can’t we just get an extra shot of espresso in the morning? Maybe hit the snooze button two or three more times? It turns out not getting enough sleep can affect almost every aspect of a healthy life. According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep is involved in the healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency is even linked to an increased risk of obesity.

“Sleep is very important to me. If I don’t get a quality night’s sleep it affects everything else I do. After a bad night’s sleep, I have less energy to exercise. I am more likely to have just whatever is around for breakfast and tend to be less effective at work,” Erin told the Better Sleep Council.

It seems the effects of lack of sleep on health are getting out to the public. “We are finding many of our guests are extremely health conscious. They are looking for a better night’s rest so they can have a healthier life,” said Jack Freed, the mattress buyer at American Home Furniture and Mattress, headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico with six Mattress Centers located throughout the state.

Americans are searching for answers in this never-ending quest for the perfect night’s sleep. In the past year, Americans have spent an estimated $41 billion on sleep aids and remedies – a number that is expected to jump to $52 billion by 2020. Unfortunately, this may be wasted money, as Consumer Reports found that, on average, sleeping pills like Ambien and Lunesta only help people get eight to 20 minutes of extra sleep a night.

The answer to a healthier night’s rest is right under our noses, or under our bodies, as the case may be. Gordon, another respondent, told the BSC, “We have recently purchased a new mattress and it’s totally helped. I used to fall asleep on the couch with the TV on. With the nice new mattress, I now shut off the TV and go to bed.”

Gordon is not alone, a full 37% of consumers intend to replace their current mattress within the next two years. If these consumers haven’t purchased a mattress in the last ten years, they will be entering a new world of mattress shopping. No longer will you be searching for a firm or a plush. Now you’ll be choosing between a traditional coil, memory foam, or hybrid mattress. “The technological advances in mattresses in just the past 10 years is amazing,” said Ted Leveque, President of American Home Furniture and Mattress.

“It’s our job to help the guest find the perfect mattress for the perfect night’s sleep,” said Cynthia, one of 20 factory-trained sleep specialists employed by American Home Furniture and Mattress statewide. “I see myself as a guide, helping someone locate the perfect mattress for them and their needs,” remarked Jessica, another of American Home Furniture and Mattress’ sleep specialists. American Home Furniture and Mattress not only offers New Mexico’s only true, one-year comfort guarantee and the guaranteed lowest price, they also offer up to 72-month financing. So it has never been easier to get into the mattress of your dreams. “It’s fun making people happy!” laughed Jessica.

So if you’re finding yourself stuck in a rut of tossing and turning, if you’re waking up sore and unable to have a productive day, the answer to your problem may be right under your “body”! Remember, a perfect night’s sleep is just a visit away to your local American Home Furniture and Mattress.
