Fishing Report, Aug. 17


Steve Henke of Bernalillo caught a 29.5-inch walleye Aug. 8 at Abiguiu. He was using a homemade spinner.

At Bluewater Lake, Diego Otero, 8, of Tome, caught and released his first tiger muskie Aug. 8. He was using hotdogs. … Rudy Contreras caught a 35-inch tiger muskie Aug. 13 at Blu. He was using a lure.

Aaron Earle of Clayton caught an 8.5-pound channel catfish Aug. 12 at Clayton Lake. He was using chicken liver.

Randall Bell of Elephant Butte caught and released a 4.10-pound smallmouth bass Aug. 12 at Elephant Butte Lake. He was using a senko.

Vance Lee of Virden caught a 5.8-pound largemouth bass Aug. 9 at Lake Roberts. He was using a Model A Bomber.

Cousins Graeme Martinez, 8, and Shane Moquino, 8, both of San Ildefonso Pueblo, joined forces to land a 17-inch rainbow trout Aug. 8 at Trout Lakes. They were using green PowerBait.


SHADY LAKES: We restocked the trout ponds on Aug. 9. The rainbow trout are averaging 10-12 inches in the easy-to-catch pond; hard-to-catch pond fish are averaging 14-16 inches. Catch-and-release large mouth bass and perch are biting throughout the day.  Bass are ranging between 2½-4 lbs. Bass/perch are biting on top water plastics and nightcrawlers. Open weekdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekends 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

ISLETA LAKES:  Fishing has been fair at both Sunrise and Turtle lakes. Best times are morning and early evening hours. Best baits have been garlic chicken liver, worms, and various stink baits.


Stream flow on the SAN JUAN RIVER from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 479 cfs. Trout fishing through the quality waters was good using dead chickens, RS2s, crystal flash emergers, chocolate foam wing emergers, little princesses, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, parachute Adams and San Juan worms. Through the bait waters, trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs, PowerBait, Fire Balls, Panther Martin spinners and Yozuri pins minnows.

Streamflow on the PECOS RIVER near Pecos on Monday was 79.9 cfs. Fishing was good using Fire Balls, PowerBait, worms, San Juan worms, stone flies, prince nymphs and Panther Martins for trout.

Stream flow on the RIO GRANDE on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 411 cfs. Fishing was good using elk hair caddis, bead-head wooly buggers, poundmeisters, copper John Barrs, Panther Martin spinners, Mepps spinners and night crawlers.

At NAVAJO LAKE, fishing was good using finesse worms, tubes, curly tail grubs, crawdad flies, crank baits and chatter baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass up to 4.5 pounds. Fishing was good using swim baits, chatter baits and crank baits for northern pike.

At ABIQUIU LAKE, fishing was fair to good using crank baits, tubes, salt craws, curly tail grubs, crawdad imitation flies and night crawlers for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was very good using spinner and night crawler combinations, crank baits and spinners.

Monday morning water flows on the CHAMA RIVER below El Vado and Abiquiu were 153 cfs and 227 cfs respectively. Fishing above and below El Vado was good using small midge patterns, woolly buggers, terrestrials, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout.

Fishing at EL VADO LAKE was good using Mepps spinners, crank baits, tubes, grubs and worms for smallmouth bass.

At UTE LAKE, fishing was very good using liver, cut bait and prepared baits for catfish.

Fishing at MONASTERY LAKE was good using small Kastmasters, Pistol Petes, worms and PowerBait for trout.

At EAGLE ROCK LAKE, fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, Silver Label Fire Bait, worms, Pistol Petes, Rooster Tails and Super Dupers for trout.

At EAGLE NEST LAKE, trout fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, worms, Panther Martins and Platte River specials. Fishing was very good using worms for perch. We had no reports on other species.

Fishing on the GALLINAS RIVER was good using worms, salmon eggs, prince nymphs and egg patterns for trout.

At LAKE ALICE, trout fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

Fishing at LAKE MALOYA was good using Pistol Petes, parachute Adams, elk hair caddis, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

At ELEPHANT BUTTE LAKE, fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, Pop Rs, tubes, senkos and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass.
