A late penalty shot goal got the Albuquerque High girls soccer team to overtime on Tuesday night.
The momentum from that goal didn’t last long, however.
Erin Pickett’s tally off a direct free kick three minutes into OT gave Albuquerque Academy a 3-2 pool-play victory over AHS in the Albuquerque Metro Championships at the APS Complex.
Mackenna Havenor’s PK tied the game at 2-2 in the 79th minute for the Bulldogs in both teams’ 2017 opener.
Volcano Vista, Eldorado and Cleveland also posted girls victories Tuesday at the metros.
Cierra Ramirez scored the first three goals of the game for the Hawks, who blanked Manzano 8-0.
Cleveland’s Corey Kizer had a first-half hat trick in the Storm’s 10-0 victory over Del Norte. Cleveland has outscored its three opponents 25-0 so far this season.
Eldorado also rolled, shutting out West Mesa 7-0.
BOYS: Eldorado, Academy, Volcano Vista and Valley had victories Tuesday at the metro tournament.
Zach Lemasters had two of Volcano’s three goals in a 3-0 win over Highland; teammate Sebastian Alcantar added a goal and an assist for the Hawks.
Johnny Baros of Valley had three goals in the Vikings’ 5-1 triumph over Manzano. One of Baros’ goals was assisted by his brother Josh, and another was assisted by Valley goalkeeper Daniel Tena.
Defending Class 5A state champion Academy got two goals and an assist from Mateo Centenera in its 3-0 victory over Cleveland in one of the tournament’s early marquee matchups.
Eldorado routed Rio Grande 6-0.
Pool play continues through Saturday for boys and girls. Then everyone gets two bracket games next week.
