Prep football: Hope, Volcano Vista roll to wins

Senior running back Moses Young managed a statistical oddity in Volcano Vista’s 2017 football opener.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Hawk rushed for 216 yards — which was 25 more yards than the team had overall thanks to a couple of huge sacks by Valley. Young also had three touchdowns in a 48-20 victory over the Vikings on a scorching hot Saturday afternoon at Nusenda Community Stadium.

“It was pretty hard (in the heat), but we all condition in the summer and we worked for it,” said Young.

After the teams traded early touchdowns — a 2-yard run by Young, a 31-yard scoring pass to Chris Prudencio for the Vikings — Volcano Vista scored the game’s next 28 points.

Quarterback Austin Blaisure scored on a sneak and also threw a 29-yard TD pass to Jacob Werner as the Hawks led 22-7 at halftime.

Young capped a 66-yard drive with a 15-yard TD run to open the third quarter. Following a Valley fumble, Young scored on the next play, up the middle for 38 yards. It was the second time Saturday that Valley fumbled and the Hawks scored on the next offensive snap. Young rushed for 96 of his yards in the first 3½ minutes of the third quarter.

“This is Moses’ time and we’re going to play to his strengths, and that’s power football,” Hawks coach Chad Wallin said.

Down 35-7, Valley did pull within 15 points on back-to-back scores by Xavier Ortiz, who made a terrific one-handed catch on a short touchdown throw by QB Naseem Madani, and a 3-yard run by Segun Oyeku.

The Hawks put it away with Justin Baca’s short TD run with 4:52 left in the game.

Volcano Vista’s victory left the East vs. West, season-opening series tied at 3-3. St. Pius and West Mesa also won for the West, with La Cueva, Manzano and Sandia winning for the East.

CENTENNIAL 56, ALBUQUERQUE HIGH 20: At the Field of Dreams, Noah Bartlett threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more as the Hawks pulled away in the second half to rout the Bulldogs in Las Cruces.

Centennial alternated Bartlett and Frost at quarterback in the first half. But the Hawks went only with Bartlett in the second half. Two of his TD passes were to Frost.

Adrian Gomez also had a big day on the ground for Centennial, rushing for 152 yards and a score.

Dominic Mesgale threw two TD passes for Albuquerque High, one to Iziah Hall and the other to Javier Pavia.

HOPE CHRISTIAN 38, ALBUQUERQUE ACADEMY 14: At the Academy, Huskies quarterback Vince Quezada threw for two touchdowns, ran for another and also kicked a field goal in Hope’s win.

The Huskies led 28-8 at halftime. Quezada hooked up with Tommy Martin on a 29-yard, fourth-down touchdown to open the game, and Quezada scored from the 1 later in the quarter. Jared Knowles rushed for a pair of second-quarter TDs for Hope.

Quezada added a 1-yard TD pass to Patrick Reynolds in the third quarter and booted a 34-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

Zane Horton scored both Academy touchdowns, a 1-yarder just before halftime and a 7-yarder early in the fourth quarter.
