Isotope Carpenter turns in an all-league performance

The day he was named to the All-Pacific Coast League Team, Albuquerque Isotopes pitcher Ryan Carpenter had quite a night on the mound — although it was a bit iffy on a few occasions.

Carpenter led the Isotopes to a 6-2 win against visiting Reno in the opener of Albuquerque’s final home series of the season.

The victory kept the Isotopes’ slim hopes of a PCL Southern Division title — and slimmer hopes of a .500 season — alive.

Albuquerque is 64-70 and in third place behind Salt Lake (68-66 heading into Monday night) and El Paso (68-67) in the division with seven games remaining.

It took Carpenter nearly 90 minutes longer to get on the mound than he had planned on Monday.

And for one inning, it looked like he might just get blown off of it.

The game’s first-pitch was scheduled for 6:35 p.m., but the rain tarp was brought on and off the field twice before that time as rain and lightning threatened the Albuquerque area.

As a result, the contest didn’t start until 8:03 p.m., but the Aces (77-58) were ready to go in front of an announced crowd of 7,453.

Reno’s Jack Reinheimer had a one-out double and Oswaldo Arcia followed with an RBI single for the game’s first run.

Christian Walker then singled and Kristopher Negron launched a bomb to left center that looked like it would make it 4-0. But Albuquerque left fielder Noel Cuevas reached over the fence to turn the blast into a long out.

Zach Borenstein came right back with another RBI single to make it 2-0, but Carpenter was long from being knocked out of the box.

The Glendale, Ariz., native allowed just two hits over the next 6⅓ innings and watched his team make its own rally in the second for all the runs he would need.

The Isotopes got RBI singles from Daniel Castro, Mike Tauchman, Christhian Adames and Ryan McMahon for a four-run outburst in the second. Tom Murphy also singled while Derrick Gibson had a ground-rule double in the inning.

Cuevas ripped a triple in the bottom of the fifth — his 12th of the season — and scored on a Murphy single for the game’s final run.

During his impressive streak, Carpenter had an unusual fourth inning in which he faced five batters and threw just five pitches.

There was one error, one-hit by-pitch, a one-pitch failed sacrifice bunt and two one-pitch fly outs.

There was no such intrigue for Carpenter, 27, in the fifth. He struck out all three hitters he faced.

He finished his evening with 10 strikeouts and three walks and has given up three runs or fewer in 14 of his last 15 outings. He lowered his earned run average to 4.29.

Center fielder Mike Tauchman was the only other Albuquerque player named All-PCL. He was 3-for-4 on Monday.

The Isotopes and Aces are scheduled to continue the series Tuesday night at Isotopes Park before single games on Wednesday and Thursday. The teams are then slated to play each other four more times from Friday-to-Monday in Reno.
