9/11 memorial events scheduled for Monday in ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A group of Albuquerque firefighters today will honor those who lost their lives responding to the Sept. 11 attacks by climbing the stairs in the city’s tallest building.

At 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane hit the North Tower in New York City, the participants will be dispatched to the Albuquerque Plaza Office Tower where they will climb the stairs five times in order to equal the height of the 110-story World Trade Center.

Afterward, they will meet in Civic Plaza for a moment of silence.

Monday evening, Daniels Family Funeral Service will host a 9/11 memorial from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Vista Verde Cemetery in Rio Rancho.

Nearly 3,000 American flags will cover the hillside in honor of each person killed in the attack.

Guests can also expect a 21-gun salute, a ceremony put on by local firefighters, bagpipe performances, balloon glow, helicopter flyover and words from the daughter of a fallen New York firefighter.
