SANTA FE, N.M. — Ray Sandoval, Zozobra event chairman who was considering a mayoral run after Mayor Javier Gonzales announced last week he wouldn’t run for reelection, said Wednesday he’s not entering the race.
In an email announcement, Sandoval said he wants to keep his commitment to leading Zozobra to its 100th anniversary in 2024 and that the annual burning of Old Man Gloom should remain remain apolitical.
“While the office of Mayor would provide me with a welcome opportunity to do more for a city and community that I love deeply, running Zozobra and being Mayor present irreconcilable conflicts of interest, and I know that Zozobra must remain completely separate from the world of politics,” he said.
He said more than 1,000 Santa Feans asked him to consider running for mayor.
Sandoval is also a spokesperson for the PNM electric utility.
