Man arrested two months after NW Albuquerque murder, police say

Morgan Quarles, 23 (MDC)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police arrested a man who they say shot and killed a woman, near Montano and Second NW, in late June, according to an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman.

Officer Tanner Tixier said APD’s Gang Unit arrested 23-year-old Morgan Quarles on September 1, near Cochiti and California Se, for an outstanding Homicide warrant.

Quarles is charged with first degree murder and aggravated burglary in connection with a double shooting that left one woman dead.

Police say on the evening June 28, in the 100 block of Hilton NW, Quarles shot and killed 25-year-old Janette Medina.

Medina was visiting a friend when two men, Quarles and 30-year-old Gabriel Mariscal, pushed their way into a house and demanded car keys from her, according to police. A fight started and Mariscal shot and injured a man who lives in the house while Quarles chased Medina into the road, demanded the car keys again, before shooting her.

Both men fled in her car. Medina died at the scene and the injured man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Mariscal was arrested June 30 after a SWAT standoff in northwest Albuquerque.
