LOGAN, Utah — Senior Claire Lynch scored off an assist by freshman Aspen Headrick in the 90th minute as the UNM women’s soccer team defeated Utah State 2-1 in a Mountain West Conference match on Sunday.
The Lobos (8-4-0, 3-1-0) took a 1-0 edge at 80:20 on freshman Alexa Kerton’s first career goal. Utah State (6-5-1, 2-2-0) tied it at 89:16 on a deflection and tap-in, but Lynch’s game-winner came 16 seconds later.
“Today was a really gritty team win over a very good Utah State team,” UNM coach Heather Dyche said. “I was proud of our heart and commitment to play both sides of the ball. Also, I was really happy to see Alexa Kirton get her first collegiate goal.”
UNM outshot Utah State, 12-11, including 6-5 on shots on goal. Jessie Hix and Jenna Killman led UNM with three shots apiece.
Emily Johnson finished with four saves while facing 11 shots.
The Lobos return home this week as they host Fresno State at 7:30 p.m. Friday and San Jose State at 1 p.m. Sunday at UNM Soccer Complex.
