The Eldorado Eagles scored just two minutes into the game and used a quick-strike barrage all evening on the way to a 49-30 spanking of Sandia on Friday night at Wilson Stadium.
The Eagles got four touchdown runs from senior running back Richard Gallegos and three touchdown passes from junior quarterback Gabe Smith and rolled to a 49-14 lead early in the fourth quarter before the Matadors added a pair of cosmetic TDs in the District 2-6A contest.
“We hurt ourselves with penalties early, and didn’t finish very well,” said Eldorado coach Charlie Dotson. “But we played really well offensively, and did a good job getting that 21-7 lead early.”
EHS (6-2, 2-0) scored just five plays into the game when Smith hit speedy receiver Colin Barz on a short pass down the middle and Barz split the defenders on the way to a 56-yard score. It was a sign of things to come as the crafty and efficient Smith completed 8-of-12 passes — most on short routes — for 245 yards.
Down 28-7 at the half, the Matadors (4-3, 0-1) looked like they would make a game of it when they drove 58 yards in seven plays with the second-half kickoff and cut the lead on Dennis Hayden’s 7-yard TD run. Sandia then recovered an onside kick at the Eagles’ 36. But on first down from the EHS 25, Matadors quarterback Junior Silva was intercepted by Graham McKenney 8 yards deep into the end zone, and McKenney returned it to his 37. On the next play, Smith hit Grayson Hertrich on a tight end slant across the middle for a 63-yard TD.
In what almost looked like an instant replay, Smith hit Hertrich on the same pattern just two minutes later for a 51-yard touchdown and it was suddenly 42-14.
Gallegos, who had 110 yards on 14 carries, picked up his final TD of the night on a 5-yard run just two minutes into the fourth quarter. He scored his other three TDs in the first half.
The Eagles got the 35-point running clock going on Gallegos’ last score, but Sandia game right back with a touchdown pass from Silva to Deante Bernard to stretch the contest back out.
Eldorado plays on Thursday at Wilson against unbeaten Manzano in a huge District 2-6A matchup.
