UNM soccer: Women reach title game; New Mexico men at ODU

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The New Mexico women’s soccer team advanced to the title game in the MWC tournament with a 3-2 victory over San Jose State in a penalty-kick shootout Thursday night. It was the Lobos’ second straight win in a shootout in the tournament.

New Mexico, seeded fourth, will take on San Diego State, the second seed, for the title Saturday. It’s the Aztecs’ sixth straight year in the title game.

On Oct. 27, in a game in Albuquerque, SDSU beat the Lobos 4-3 in their season finale.

MEN: UNM will conclude its regular season tonight with a Conference USA match at Old Dominion.

The Lobos (8-4-4, 3-2-2) will then turn their attention to the Conference USA Tournament. UNM ranks 55th in the nation in RPI, making the C-USA tournament critical to a possible NCAA Tournament bid. New Mexico is the defending tournament champion.

The conference tournament, also at Old Dominion, will begin Nov. 8.

UNM is fourth in the C-USA standings with 11 points, trailing second-place Old Dominion (15). Florida International is No. 1 with 20 points, while Kentucky is third (13).

The Lobos are coming off back-to-back 0-0 double-overtime draws against Denver and Charlotte.

Senior goalkeeper Jason Beaulieu has 22 shutouts in his career, ranked third in UNM history.

The UNM offense has not produced a goal since Oct. 18, when the Lobos tied UCLA 1-1.
