Local Events Planned For Memorial Day

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — America’s fallen warriors will be honored at several events in and around Albuquerque on Memorial Day.

The holiday, formerly known as Decoration Day, commemorates U.S. service members who have died while in the military.


♦ The United Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day commemoration beginning at 9 a.m. Monday at the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial, 1100 Louisiana SE, with music by the Dukes of Albuquerque from American Legion Post 99. The Roadrunner Convoy of the New Mexico Military Vehicle Preservation Association will display restored vintage military vehicles at the memorial.

Official ceremonies begin at 10 a.m., and speakers include Mayor Richard Berry and U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M.

Events include performances of patriotic music, the parade of state flags by Kirtland Air Force Base personnel and rifle and cannon volleys. Ceremonies are scheduled to end at 11:30 a.m.

Overflow parking and free shuttle bus service will be available from the Kirtland Credit Union and Bank of America parking lots at Louisiana and Gibson SE.

⋄  French Funeral Homes will host Memorial Day events from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.

Mayor Berry will be keynote speaker at 11 a.m., and cadets from Bataan Military Academy will render a salute to veterans’ grave sites. Horses for Heroes, a Santa Fe-based nonprofit that assists wounded warriors, will also make a presentation.

⋄  Bear Canyon Estates, 4440 Morris NE, will host a Memorial Day celebration at 3 p.m. Guests are asked to RSVP at 292-9191.


The city of Rio Rancho will observe Memorial Day with a parade and remembrance ceremony.

The parade will start at 10 a.m. Monday, heading east from Country Club Drive down Southern Boulevard, and end at the Veterans Monument Park on Pinetree Road adjacent to the Esther Bone Memorial Library.

Immediately after the parade, a remembrance ceremony for fallen service members will take place at the Veterans Monument Park. Mayor Tom Swisstack will be the guest speaker.


New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary Tim Hale will be keynote speaker at a Memorial Day program starting at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Santa Fe National Cemetery, 501 N. Guadalupe.

Gov. Susana Martinez will give opening remarks.

Participants in the hour-long program include: Vietnam Veterans of America Post 996; VFW Post 2951; VFW Post 2951 Ladies Auxiliary; Santa Fe Concert Band; Blue Star and Gold Mothers; New Mexico National Guard; Kirtland Air Force Base; VA Police; and Santa Fe Police.


The Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park will host Memorial Day ceremonies at 11 a.m. Monday, with presentations, tours and music. The theme for the weekend is Life After Combat. Keynote speaker will be veteran and author Lee Alley. Music will be by Linda Knief and the 44th Army Band. There will also be speakers from the David Westphall Veterans Foundation and a medals presentation. For more information, go to
