Lobos get commitment from 6-9 junior college forward

The Lobos got a much needed boost of good news Wednesday when 6-foot-9 junior college forward Tajuan Agee gave a verbal commitment to attend the University of New Mexico next season.

Agee, a native of Chicago who was on an official recruiting visit in Albuquerque at last week’s Lobos win over Omaha, is a sophomore at Tyler (Texas) Junior College who said he liked the family atmosphere he felt at UNM.

“As soon as I got to campus,” Agee said, “I could just feel the family aspect of the team. They brought me in and they treated me like I was already a part of the team.”

Agee initially announced his commitment via Twitter, thanking his mother and his junior college coach Mike Marquis and adding, “I am proud to announce my commitment to the University of New Mexico and Coach Paul Weir! #GoLobos”

UNM can’t talk about recruits until the sign National Letters of Intent, and the early signing period to do so ended Nov. 18. Agee can sign in April.

Agee, who was recruited initially by UNM assistant Brandon Mason, said aside from the instant chemistry he felt with UNM players, he liked the Lobos’ style of play. Asked if he was going to be able to run as much as Weir wants his teams to run, Agee laughed.

“Being from Chicago,” he said, “that’s what we do.”

Agee said he has a versatile game — a forward who played guard until his junior year of high school — and likes to effect the game at both ends of the court.

Asked how his season was going, he said he was most excited his team is 7-0 and still has room to improve. He has played in seven games, though only briefly in one. In the six full games he played, he’s averaging 10.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

He said he liked how the Lobos use senior Sam Logwood and feels he can be a similar player — capable of playing in the post or perimeter.

Agee is the second Lobos commitment for the 2018 recruiting class, joining prep point guard Drue Drinnon of Georgia, who signed a letter of intent earlier this month.
