Arizona man accused of faking cancer to collect donations

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A 46-year-old man is accused of faking a battle with cancer and then his death to scam relatives, friends and strangers of $30,000.

Christopher Wade Nelson remained jailed after being arrested Dec. 7 by Scottsdale police on suspicion of theft, fraud and taking the identity of another.

According to police, Nelson took the identity of others to solicit donations from at least 20 people, including former high school classmates, strangers, acquaintances, family members and friends.

Police say while Nelson pretended he was receiving experimental treatment for terminal pancreatic cancer, the story was a scheme.

According to police, Nelson posed as a relative to falsely say he’d killed himself when he feared the truth would come out.

Court records don’t list a defense attorney who could comment on the allegations.
