$1.5B contract to clean up Los Alamos contamination awarded

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. — The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $1.5 billion contract to provide nuclear cleanup and remediation at the Los Alamos National Laboratory to a consortium of contractors.

The contract announced Wednesday will help pay for cleanup and removal of nuclear waste, demolition and cleanup of some facilities and groundwater cleanup and monitoring.

The contract was awarded to a group known as Newport News Nuclear BWXT-Los Alamos, LLC, a group formed by two contractors. The contract is for five years with an additional five years in two optional extensions.

Los Alamos was the birthplace of the atomic bomb and is still one of the nation’s premier research facilities. A contract to run the laboratory itself expires in September 2018.
