Sports Speak Up!

BOB DAVIE must be getting desperate recruiting a whole lot of junior college transfers. None of them from New Mexico. I believe he will continue to lose with outsiders. I also believe he realizes his job is on the line and needs JC kids. I can’t wait for the day he is gone. Thanks to Rocky Long for the time he was here.

KESHAWN BANKS and Jordan Byrd: Way to represent New Mexico. Go Aztecs.

THE UNM Athletic Department has been under investigation internally and by the State of New Mexico as well. A recent investigation by a retired federal judge reportedly found no wrong doing in his verbal report to UNM Interim President Chaouki Abdallah. However, Abdallah is going to hire another investigator to look further into “whatever,” again dragging UNM and their alumni through the mud. May there be no doubt that recruiting is being compromised in all sports. Hello perpetual deficit?

JESSE JAMES was not “robbed.” As the rule is interpreted, video confirms he did not complete the pass play process. The ball clearly slips from his grasp and hits the turf, therefore, incomplete pass. Having said that, the catch rule should be simplified: player secures possession with both feet or body in bounds, if, after securing possession the ball comes loose or out of his possession, before he hits the ground, it’s a fumble. If it comes loose after hitting the turf, it’s still a completion — the ground cannot cause a fumble.

FOR COACH WEIR, consider a box-and-1 zone defense. Either your players are not buying into your press, or it’s not working. You would do better with perimeter defense and a sagging middle against taller teams.

BEST QUOTE of the Year: “The longer I’m here, the more I learn this place is Special!” — Tesha Buck, UNM Women Lobos.

SWISHFUL THINKING: As always, it was an absolute joy to watch the Lady Lobos bring their intensity to the court in their game against Lamar. However, I couldn’t help but notice something didn’t feel quite right. Then it dawned on me. Shouldn’t we have a male dance squad at women’s basketball games? Double standards are almost as bad as double dribbles. Bring on the gyrating male dancers.
