Wondering what to do with the withering Christmas tree? How about recycling it? That will save valuable landfill space, create mulch and save water.
That’s the purpose of free Christmas tree recycling in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho areas sponsored by those cities and Public Service Company of New Mexico.
Crews from PNM Vegetation Management, Albuquerque’s Solid Waste Management Department and Rio Rancho’s Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful Division will grind the trees into mulch. About 1,500 trees are expected to be delivered.
The public can pick up free mulch from these trees at four of the five recycling locations while supplies last, organizers said.
Trees must have decorations, tinsel, lights and tree stand removed. There is a limit of five trees per resident.
Trees will be accepted at the following locations in Albuquerque from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 2-14:
⋄ Montessa Park Convenience Center, 3512 Los Picaros SE.
⋄ Eagle Rock Convenience Center, 6301 Eagle Rock NE.
⋄ Ladera Golf Course, 3401 Ladera NW.
Trees will be accepted at the following locations in Rio Rancho from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 2-12:
⋄ Rio Rancho Sports Complex, 3501 High Resort SE; and
⋄ Sandoval County Landfill, 2708 Iris NE (no free mulch at this location).
