APS releases its 2018-19 school year calendar

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque Public Schools has approved and released its 2018-19 school calendar.

It has students returning to class on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, and wrapping up the school year on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.

Winter break for students runs from Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, to Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 (a staff training day). Second semester starts on Jan. 7, 2019.

Spring break will also be at same time as UNM’s during the week of March 11, 2019.

Based on public feedback, the calendar was altered slightly when many of those commenting requested a little extra time off before Christmas for holiday prep and travel, APS said in a news release.

Another request was to try to match spring break with UNM. It was possible to do so in 2019 because it did not conflict with state-mandated testing, as in previous years.

APS said next year’s calendar has similarities to this year’s, including a two-day fall break, a three-day break at Thanksgiving and time off for Labor Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day and the Vernal Holiday. It also includes a teacher training day after winter break, which extends the students’ holiday to Jan. 7, 2019.

Schools are already closed on Veterans Day, which falls on a Sunday in 2018.
