ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A family out for a walk in the Bosque New Year’s day found a body in the Rio Grande near Tingley Beach, according to a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department.
Officer Michael Schroeder said the family called police around 1:20 p.m. and bike patrol officers and Open Space search and rescue units responded.
“At that point we came out and were able to recover the body,” Schroeder said.
He would not say whether the body was male or female. He said the Officer of the Medical Investigator will determine how the person died and how long they had been in the river. Schroeder said he didn’t know if the person had been killed.
“It is very preliminary in the investigation,” he said. “We have very little to go on at this time.”
As investigators worked to remove the body from where it was floating in thigh-high water on the east bank of the river south of Central, bicyclists, runners, and families who had come to Tingley to enjoy the mild weather gathered on the bike path to watch what was happening.
