Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas

WASHINGTON – Sen. Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican who made a strong run for president in 2016, has endorsed former New Mexico Republican Party Chairman Monty Newman in his bid for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District seat.

Meanwhile, former New Mexico Democratic Party Chair Debra Haaland has secured an endorsement from Washington state progressive Democrat Pramilla Jayapal in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District.

“Monty has shown his commitment to work tirelessly to promote principles that reflect the values of the people of his district, and I urge the voters of the Second District to send him to Washington,” Cruz said in a statement endorsing Newman.

Newman is the former mayor of Hobbs and served as the state chair for the Republican Party from 2010 to 2012. He owned and operated a small business for more than 30 years and is a past vice president of the National Association of Realtors, according to his campaign.

Jayapal, who was recently featured in Politico’s Power List for 2018, is the first Indian American woman elected to Congress. She said Haaland, a lawyer and former Laguna Pueblo tribal administrator who served as Democratic Party chair from 2015-17, is a “champion of the people.”
