Rio Rancho speed van goes up in flames, police say

Rio Rancho Police found a speed enforcement van on fire late Wednesday night and are investigating the incident as a possible arson (RRPD)

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Rio Rancho Police are investigating a possible arson after finding the speed enforcement van on fire late Wednesday night, according to a spokesman.

Captain Ron Vigil said officers, along with the fire department, responded around 11 p.m. to a vehicle fire on the 1000 block of Nicklaus SE.

“The vehicle was identified as a speed van that was deployed in the neighborhood to deter speeding,” he said.

Vigil said the investigation is still active but police are considering that someone purposefully set the van on fire.

“The Rio Rancho Police Department will continue speed enforcement in the area along with the eventual replacement of the speed enforcement vehicle,” he said.
