ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A year after joining the Bernalillo County Commission, Steven Michael Quezada has been elected by fellow commissioners as the governing body’s chairman.

Quezada, a Democrat, replaces commissioner Debbie O’Malley, who held the post for the last year. The vote was unanimous. Commissioners also voted unanimously to make Lonnie Talbert, a Republican, vice chair.

“I’m good at listening to people and keeping an open mind,” Quezada said after the meeting. “I think I bring that kind of leadership.”

He said that among the issues he’d like to work on as commission chairman is a sick leave ordinance for the county that’s fair to both workers and businesses. He said he also wants to continue working with the city to move important projects forward. Quezada — an actor known best known for his role as Agent Gomez in “Breaking Bad” — previously served as the commission’s vice chair.

As chairman of the commission, Quezada assigns commissioners to various boards and committees, although those appointments go before the full commission for approval. Quezada said he doesn’t expect many changes to the current committee assignments, saying his colleagues are doing a good job on the committees they serve on.
