NM House Dems’ political arm apologizes for email

SANTA FE — The New Mexico House Democrats’ political arm apologized Monday for sending out an email that included a “contribute” link — a no-no for lawmakers during legislative sessions.

However, a spokesman for Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver’s office said the apology may not have been necessary, since the “blackout” period on fundraising during sessions does not apply to political committees.

In any case, the New Mexico House Democratic Campaign Committee described the link on a weekend update it sent out as an error. The initial email was not sent out directly by any current legislator, but the group has given hefty contributions to several Democratic incumbents in recent months.

Per state law, all 112 legislators and the governor are barred from raising campaign funds from Jan. 1 through Feb. 15, the session’s last day.

The blackout period is intended to reduce the possibility of undue influence during legislative sessions.
