Troubadours and nobility: Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett and ‘Gala of the Royal Horses’ on tap

Robert Earl Keen isn’t as up-to-date on social media as one might expect.

In fact, there’s a huge learning curve – but he’s giving it a try.

And it’s social media that inspired his latest project in music.

“I’m writing songs that are 90 seconds long,” he says. “I have a song about a fortune cookie and what I think about it.”

An album should follow later this year, but first, Keen is on the road with fellow Texas musician Lyle Lovett.

The pair have a four-decade friendship.

And the evening of music consists of music from their respective repertoires. Not to mention some stories going back to their days at Texas A&M.

“We bonded over music – and girls,” Keens says with a laugh. “We’d sit in the house and just chat and then play music.”

New Mexicans are getting a chance to see “The Gala of the Royal Horses” beginning today at Expo New Mexico. The international show will make Albuquerque its home for the next two weekends. I caught up with Rene Gasser, who cultivated the show over the course of more than a decade.
