One dead, another arrested after southern NM crash

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A crash involving multiple vehicles near Chapparal, NM Friday afternoon left a man dead and another in jail, according to a New Mexico State Police spokesman.

Officer Carl Christiansen said 22-year-old Andres Rayos was killed after Jeramy Lucero, 23, crashed into him on Highway 404.

Christiansen said police arrested Lucero, charging him with DWI and reckless driving. Other charges are pending.

He said police responded to the fatal crash around 1:05 p.m. where they learned Lucero was trying to pass another vehicle when he crashed into Rayos, causing Rayos to sideswipe a third vehicle before his car flipped and caught fire.

He said Rayos died at the scene while the driver and passenger of the third vehicle were taken to a Las Cruces hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
