On tap: Marble offers ‘Brews & Bites Challenge’ and ‘Science of Beer’

Marble Brewery’s top brewers will be going toe to toe during the “Brews & Bites Challenge” with the help of a couple local chefs.

Brewmaster Josh Trujillo is teaming up with chef Israel Rivera of The Shop Breakfast & Lunch and head brewer John Heine is joining chef Tony Chiado from Kitsune food truck for the challenge at Marble’s Heights location on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

“We thought why not make it a little more challenging to where our two head brewers are teamed up with a local chef to create two (food) pairings and we will let the patrons then decide who has the best pairings,” said Marble marketing and events coordinator Geraldine Lucero. “They’re working together to create two pairings so each brewer has picked a special beer and then they’re going to showcase a classic.”

The beer pairings are Double White and El Gabacho and Hot Fudge Sundae, which is the barrel-aged stout with brettanomyces yeast, and Marble’s classic Red. The ticket cost includes four 7-ounce pours with four tapa-style bites. Guests also will be given a description of the beers and food pairings. Patrons will be able to vote for their favorite pairing, and then the chef and brewer who win this round will advance to the next round featuring other local chefs teamed up with another brewer.

Get geeky about beer during Marble’s “Science of Beer” event on Feb. 23 at Explora. This is the second year for the event. Last year’s debut event sold out.

“The ‘Science of Beer’, is where all of us at Marble come in and we are going to set up five beer stations throughout the museum,” Lucero said. “It is a 21-and-over event. We will have our head brewer John Heine, our packaging manager Nate Jackson, and some other brewery representatives giving lectures, about 20-minute lectures, in one of their lecture halls. … We are trying to get as geeky as possible.”

Lectures include Beer Science 101, Water Chemistry for Brewing, a special lecture on brettanomyces, and a lecture on packaging, regarding what goes into filling cans, bottles and kegs and how Marble tests packaging for low dissolved oxygen and carbonation.

Marble continues to expand its merchandise offerings and recently added beer soap to the list. Marble merchandising manager Lisa Cordova worked together with Roberta Easter from Enchanted Soap Collections to make the soap, which costs $9 a bar. The soap is exclusively available at Marble locations.

“There was a lot of tests and trial runs, but they nailed it with the Double White soap and the Oatmeal Stout soap,” Lucero said. “Our beer is used in the soap, and the Double White has orange peel and oats, and it smells delicious, and then the Oatmeal Stout has hints of coffee and oats in it as well. … It’s such an awesome product, and we’re all very proud of it. It smells great, it feels great, and it is just fun to shower with.”
