Here’s a postscript from my Monday interview with UNM wide receive Delane Hart-Johnson.
Will Parks, Hart-Johnson’s older brother and a Denver Broncos safety, played his college ball at Arizona. Though he played defense for the Wildcats, he was well acquainted with U of A co-offensive coordinator Calvin Magee.
After Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez was fired on Jan. 3, Magee in essence became a free agent.
In January, after UNM coach Bob Davie had fired offensive coordinator Bob DeBesse, Hart-Johnson— who was back home in Philadelphia between semesters — got a phone call from Lobos quarterbacks coach Apollo Wright.
“(Wright) asked me for my brother’s number,” Hart-Johnson said. “They called him, and my brother gave (Magee) a good résumé about how he treats players.
“(Parks) was one of the references to get coach Magee. So I knew he probably was gonna get the job after that.”
Magee’s hiring as UNM’s new offensive coordinator was announced on Jan. 18.
