LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico women’s golf team finished sixth of 12 teams compeating at The Rebel Beach tournament that ended on Tuesday in Las Vegas, Nev.
“Big numbers got the best of us this tournament,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “We hoped for a better start to our spring season.”
After playing three rounds in two days, the Lobos carded a team total of 44-over 908 [306-302-300]. The team ended the first day in 8th place on the leaderboard and then climbed up to 6th place after earning 9-birdies in the team’s third round.
Junior Darian Zachek led the Lobos throughout all three rounds and ended with a total score of 8-over 244 [76-73-73] leaving her tied for 11th place with five other athletes. Zachek added seven birdies to the team’s final total of 33-birdies after the final round.
Senior Ingrid Gutierrez ended her time in Las Vegas with a final score of 11-over 227 [76-78-73] and only two strokes separated her from freshman, Caroline Jansson who carded 13-over 229 [75-78-76] after her three rounds. Senior Alexandra Moisand struggled during her first round but improved throughout the last two rounds and ended with a score of 16-over 232 [81-75-76]. Rounding it out for the team was sophomore Reva Morris who ended the Rebel Beach Invitational with a score of 22-over 238 [79-76-83].
Representing UNM as individuals was junior, Emma Edwards and redshirt-freshman, Zoey Akagi-Bustin. Edwards claimed the same score as fellow teammate, Moisand with a total of 16-over 232 [81-78-73] and Akagi-Bustin followed with a final score of 28-over 244 [84-75-85].
“Better course management will be key for the next events,” saod Trujillo.
The Lobos will be heading to the Arizona Wildcat Invitational this coming weekend and will start the first of three rounds on Monday in Tucson.
