ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A shooting at a park Thursday afternoon in southwest Albuquerque left one man dead, according to a police spokesman.
Officer Daren DeAguero said police are questioning two people in connection to the shooting.
He said officers responded to the shooting, at Tower Park just before 5 p.m. where they found a man shot in the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he died.
DeAguero said the park will remain closed until police wrap up their investigation.
Two boys told the Journal they showed up to Tower Park skatepark Thursday night to find the park strung with crime scene tape and surrounded by police cars.
They said they have been skating at the park for nearly a decade and were not surprised, as gunshots are a regular occurrence.
“We’ve been shot at a lot at this park,” one of the boys said. “It’s kind of known for that.”
They said the parking lot at the west end of the park will be full of cars some nights and, often, those people will be shooting off guns into the air.
“It’s a sad thing to say, that we’re not scared of gunshots or bullets whizzing by us,” one of the boys said.
