Class 2A Girls state hoops: Logan, Fort Sumner/House win

BERNALILLO — Offensively efficient Logan shot exactly 50 percent from the field in three of the four quarters and sent home the defending Class 2A girls champions with a punctuation mark, a 48-30 quarterfinals rout Tuesday afternoon at Bernalillo High School.

Logan advances to face familiar foe Fort Sumner/House in Thursday’s semifinals at Bernalillo High. Logan won both meetings this season, 60-53 and 53-50.

The other semifinal will feature the winners of Tuesday’s late Peñasco-Magdalena and Lordsburg-Mescalero Apache games.

No. 1 LOGAN 48, No. 8 TATUM 30: Jordan Hines and Kaylee Foote had 13 points apiece for the Longhorns (21-5), who led 21-16 at the half and then blew the game open with an 18-6 domination of the third period.

Celeste Jimenez scored 16 points to lead the Coyotes (16-11), whose season was bookended with losses to Logan. Tatum lost its opener 41-32 to the Longhorns on Dec. 1.

In the rematch, Tatum found points at a premium, shooting only 8-for-37 from the field, and half of those baskets came from Jimenez.

No. 4 FORT SUMNER/HOUSE 59, TSE ‘YI ‘GAI 48: Abby Wilton scored 20 points and the winners dominated the glass with a 36-14 rebounding edge.

Claudia Torres added 12 points for Fort Sumner/House (19-10) and had seven rebounds, as did three of her teammates.

Janiece Commanche led the Dine Warriors (23-6) with 13 points. Faith Lopez added 10.

No. 7 LORDSBURG 39, No. 2 MESCALERO APACHE 36: Anissa Ploweman and Madison Miller scored 11 points each for Lordsburg (21-7), which won despite shooting only 13-of-53 (24.5 percent) from the field.

Miller had a whopping 18 rebounds, and Lordsburg won the rebounding battle 40-28.

Ramona Fossum scored 13 points and Fallon Velasquez 10 for Mescalero (27-2), which went 11-of-49 from the field. Katelyn Yuzos had 16 rebounds.

Michaela Zamora had three 3-pointers and finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Magdalena (22-7).
