Class 1A Boys hoops: Quemado withstands Evangel Christian upset bid

BERNALILLO — No. 12 seed Evangel Christian put Quemado on upset alert through three quarters, but the Eagles dominated the fourth quarter and won going away, 71-53 at the Class 1A boys quarterfinals at Bernalillo High.

Quemado, seeded fourth, is in today’s semifinal around at Bernalillo against No. 1 seed Melrose. No. 2 Maxwell also held its seed, defeating No. 7 Floyd in another quarterfinal. Its semifinal opponent will be Springer.

No. 4 QUEMADO 71, No.12 EVANGEL CHRISTIAN 53: Surprising Evangel Christian led 37-36 through three quarters before Quemado came storming back, hitting 13-of-18 shots from the field in the final stanza.

DJ Mathis led Quemado (23-5) with 20 points, and three others joined him in double figures.

Lucas Tenorio scored 25 points for Evangel Christian (13-17), which shot 50 percent from the field for the game.
