APD looking for more witnesses to deadly park shooting

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Detectives are looking for additional witnesses to a deadly shooting at Tower Pond Park, in Southwest Albuquerque, March 1.

Officer Simon Drobik, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said they want to speak with anyone who was at the park before or during the shooting. He said this will strengthen the case police are building.

Two teenagers have been arrested in the shooting, which left 25-year-old Larry DeSantiago dead.

Santiago Armijo, 15, is charged with murder and is being tried as adult and 16-year-old Jeremiah De La Pena, is charged with larceny of a firearm and tampering with evidence. De La Pena is being tried in children’s court.

The pair told police they had gone with DeSantiago to his car but he started behaving oddly and started to drive away so they jumped out, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court. Then, they said, DeSantiago chased after them.

That’s when Armijo shot him with a gun he’d stolen from a party, according to the complaint.

Drobik said although detectives have arrested the two teenagers, they were greeted by a chaotic scene after the shooting and hope to talk with any additional witnesses they can.

“There was a soccer game that we know of that was going on,” he said. “We know there were people in park.”
