ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Of the 50 states, New Mexico is the most dependent on the federal government, according to the financial website WalletHub.
The state, home to two national laboratories and huge swaths of federal land, was ranked third for return on taxes paid to the federal government, fifth for federal funding as a share of state revenue and fifth for its share of federal jobs, according to a report released by the site on Tuesday.
Delaware was ranked least dependent on the federal government in the study.
Ranking just behind New Mexico were Kentucky, Missippi and Alabama.
New Mexico receives the most federal contracts and grants per dollars paid in taxes, according to the study.
