Updated story: APD: 12-year-old dies after being struck by SUV outside school Thursday

A 12-year-old girl was critically injured after being hit by a vehicle in front of Cleveland Middle School Thursday evening, according to a police spokesman.

Officer Daren DeAguero said the girl was taken to a hospital with severe injuries and is “not expected to survive.”

He said the crash occurred around 5 p.m. in front of the school at Louisiana and Natalie NE.

DeAguero said the girl was crossing Louisiana when a vehicle in the left lane stopped to allow her to cross and, as she entered the right lane, she was struck by a 2015 GMC SUV.

“She was in the crosswalk used by Cleveland Middle School, which is marked with a sign but no traffic control lights,” he said. “This crash occurred after school hours, so the flashing signals indicating a school zone were not engaged.”

DeAguero said alcohol was not a factor but speed “is yet to be determined.”

He said all lanes of Louisiana are now open.

Police tape cordoned off a block of Louisiana directly in front of the school Thursday evening. An SUV could be seen crashed into a metal fence on top of the median.

Several police cars surrounded the block as officers investigated.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the girl had died based on information from the police. A spokesman now says the girl is in critical condition.
